I have the honour to acknowledge the receipt of

your Confidential Despatch of 20th. May on the subject of the

Tytam Tuk Waterworks Scheme. When my Despatch of the 2nd. of lovem- 12-ber, 1912, was written I was under the impression that the report

promised in Sir F. Lugard's Despatch No. 390 of the 16th.lovenber,

1911, had been sent to you. I regret to find that the report was

never sent.

I now enclose a statement by the Director of

Public Works which explains the difference in scope and cost bet-

-ween the scheme some provision for which was made in the Estimates

for 1907 and the scheme which has since been decided upon. The

statement also shows the manner in which the original estimate of

$2,017,000 was arrived at. I also enclose a drawing of a section of

the proposed dan with a note of the method of its construction.

The scheme was referred to the Public Works Committee on the 7th.

of December, 1911, and approved by it.

As regards paragraph 4 of your Despatch I would

explain that the allusion in paragraph 2 of my Confidential Des-

-patch of 15th. April, 1913, to a report of the excess of $138,681

in my Confidential Despatch of 2nd. November, 1912, referred to the

statement in the latter Despatch that the contract amounted to

81,781,817.98 whereas the sum allowed for the contract in the

original
